Crónica / Opinion: Moda - quando as artes se cruzam / Fashion - when the arts cross paths

Nesse momento, toca na minha cabeça o “Where is my mind” e, enquanto vou andando, o mundo faz perfeito sentido.

EN: I believe there is a spot where the various types of art cross paths. Sometimes we only feel the two of them meeting, we feel the electricity they transmit, other times it just passes us by, other times we simply do not understand it. The most simple example is music and dance. It is simple to see how music and dance, two types of art, together create a sort of new dimension. Music is the type of art that touches us the most - or the one we let ourselves touch more easily. When music is on, we dare to dance, we dare to show others our feelings and sensations without using words. That is pure energy and testifies to the power of music. Another simple example is singing: the meeting point between poetry or writing and music. Like I’ve said, music is pure inspiration, it is an elevation of our senses, like letting go, it is like we want to let others know how we actually feel. If we are sad we listen to sad music, if we are happy we listen to happy music. This just says it all.

Throughout these weeks it has been said a lot that fashion and the way we make it our own is a direct expression of who we are or want to be. Therefore, I have two questions: first, if music is our most intimate place, the most real place, and fashion is a direct expression of what we are, how do they coexist? second, se we listen to music accordingly to the way we are feeling, don’t we dress also accordingly to how we feel?

The answers to these questions would be material for a thesis, certainly, and said thesis would be a beam of light to us all. Unfortunately, I have no way of, in these minutes I am taking to write this, researching and finding the answers. Thus, I will answer only using my intuition, my heart and my feelings. Being that what is most vulnerable in me, I believe it is an adequate choice.

When I wake up in the morning and there is nobody around me, watching me or demanding that I be coherent, I let myself be incoherent. I let myself feel things that make no sense if I feel like it. In that moment, “Where is my mind” is playing inside my head e, while walking, the world makes perfect sense. Everything is in place. There is silence besides the notes in my head but, in the air, there’s pure art. There’s feeling vulnerability, truth and music. Then, I add another variable to the equation: I open the closet and ask myself how I want the world to see me. It’s no easy decision but, most of the times, I don’t pay much attention to what I pick, I don’t think that what I wear defines me, I even think that losing too much time chosing is frivolous. However, it’s in the days when “Where is my mind” is truly playing in my head, in the days when I feel that nothing’s worth it, that the clothes I put on are nothing but the plain, truthful, desperate and absolutely transparent expression of myself. And, at the end, when the last notes play and I glance at the mirror, in that split second, there is art in the air. And then it fades away.

Crónica / Opinion: Why it’s important that a man knows how to dress up to a party - note from an incurable romantic

EN: Since we’re little girls we’ve been exposed to images of well dressed men. Whether it’s in movies, in cartoons, in real life feed, in tv or in real life. We’ve seen prince Rainier and prince William, every single prince and king in the Disney movies, our military troops wearing uniforms, we’ve seen soldiers at war, with their uniforms running intrepid against the enemy line, our fathers going out with our mothers for a party, their wedding pictures in the living room and we’ve seen, with globalization and the arrival of american movies, the young mand picking up the young girl for prom night and, if I’m not mistaken, he’s dressed accordingly. To these days, when we get married, before we go in, we take a sneak pick and there he is, the man of our dreams, dressed accordingly.

In our minds and hearts, in the most crucial moments in life, you are supposed to come from somewhere unexpected and rescue us from facing alone the incertainty of the future, sweep us off our feet in one last dreamy dance, take us away to a happy ending. It’s engraved in our genetic code we must gasp when Rhett Butler asks to dance with the young widow Scarlett O’Hara breaking every rule of the society. It is engrave in said code that we cannot resist when a man in a tox asks us to dance to the sound of Dean Martin’s That’s Amore. It is an irrevocable mark in our genetic code that a man wearing a military ou naval uniform is a good catch. A catch that may go to war and never come back - that’s for sure! - BUT what if, one day, unexpectedly, we are at home, cooking, and our heart is aking with missing him, we hear the back door opening, we run to the porch, wiping our hands to the apron, and there he is, waiting for us, in his uniform?

Nowadays, most of these situations don’t happen in our society. Being married to a naval officer as I could be, I’d never be at home in the middle of the day cooking and being surprised by him. The one o’clock news would report his arrival, dinner would be a pre-cooked meal shoved in the microwave, and the house with a porch a over-price rented apartment.

Therefore, my darlings, in the face of such a strict society when it comes to roman, I understant the temptation to think none of these rituals or traditions make sense anymore. But, when you are getting ready for a party, when you think the blazer isn’t worth it, that buying a suit is the same as wearing a blazer, that a tox is a waste of money, think of us, in our rooms, for hours chosing just the most perfect dress, the perfect shoes, thinking of you and of the moment we meet. The talking over appetizers, the stolen looks over the main course, the sweet moment of desert, all leading up to that moment when maybe, just maybe, you might ask us to dance and ten...bells will ring.

A good blogger, a new book

Having already passed through Porto and some shops in the capital, Lisbon, he´s still going to be in the 19th of May at 17h in Vasco da Gama and 20th at 16h in Cascais.

"This blog took me to live things I never would have lived otherwise. things I can not explain here, nor probably in a more intimate atmosphere (hopefully) a presentation of a book. even I can tell you - as I would as well - that this book is something that I never expected. to be completely honest I knew (or thought I knew, there are always more optimistic days than others) that this book would happen sooner or later. I knew that I would receive an e-mail one day. and the day that Francisco wrote to me I felt like answering it "I thought you´ll never right me back" but I felt this book was something more important than that. was something that possibly is the few things I can boast in life. is that all the smallest little shit I did with this blog, I made it because I found a way. and when I think about that I have a certain pride. and this book gives a body to that pride. a beautiful body.

EN: Dear readers, this post may offend susceptibilities. However, it’s time for some tough love anda there are things that must be said and, more importantly, must be heard. The legging’s trend has transformed society and the style notions it followed. Actually, we should give credit to this piece of clothing that challenged the most basic clothing rule.

Leggings came to ask “what are trousers after all?” and left half the worl wondering. People are, nowadays, still pretty insure about what to reply to the question above. Some people, the more conservative maybe, defend that leggings aren’t trousers and can only be used combined with a piece of clothing that hides the bum. Far-right wing will go to the extent to say that leggings are only tights and mustn’t have any of the privileges that trousers have. In the other hand, the left wing, more liberal and less conservative, advocates in favour of decision criteria such as level of transparency, fabric and length to categorize the leggings as more or less pants. But, what we should absolutely mention is the far-left wing that swears to its grave that leggings must be assumed as trousers and to behave otherwise is discriminatory behaviour.

In the end, there’s still pretty much mixed feelings about this. Maybe elections, or a referendum, should be considered to help society defining a position on the leggings dilemma. Sounds over the top? Dear reader, I assure you it is not and I can explain why.
Definitive positioning of leggings in one of the two categories would have the great advantage of removing the surprise element. Yes, because leggings are see through and they show the thong and the bum when that unexpected person on the supermarket bends over to get something that fell off their cart. If you define that leggings can be used without the convencional long shirt or coat, we would be prepared for this vision. In the other hand, if the veredict went the other way and the leggings were, finally, renegated to the tights class, the market would benefit enormously from all the people that would have to actually buy pants! That’s why I say, reader, dear reader, that the leggins issue is not to be undervalued and elections would be, definitely, a measure to consider.
